Formula to Calculate TMT Steel Bar Weight per Metre

Weight (kg/m) = D² / 162.28

Where D is the nominal diameter of the steel bar in millimetres (mm). For example, for a 12mm TMT bar: (12 × 12) ÷ 162.28 = 0.888 kg per metre.

Standard Full Length (12m / 40ft): In India, construction rebars are rolled to standard 12-metre commercial lengths. One 12m length weight = 12 × (D² / 162.28) kg. For 12mm rebar, one length weighs 10.66 kg.
Mathematical Derivation: Steel density is 7,850 kg/m³. Bar volume = π × (D/1000)² ÷ 4 × 1 m³. Multiplying by 7,850 kg/m³ gives π × 7850 ÷ 4,000,000 × D² = D² / 162.28 kg/m.

Fe 500 vs Fe 500D vs Fe 550D — What Does the “D” Mean?

The “D” designation stands for High Ductility. Punjab falls in Seismic Zone IV (high earthquake vulnerability). Structural engineers mandate Fe 500D or Fe 550D because they deliver significantly higher elongation and energy absorption capacity during seismic shocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — TMT Bar Weights & Bundling

What is the formula to calculate TMT bar weight per metre?

The standard civil engineering formula to calculate round steel and TMT bar weight per metre is W = (D² / 162.28) kg/m, where D is the nominal diameter in millimetres. For example, a 12mm TMT bar weighs (12 × 12) / 162.28 = 0.888 kg/m.

What is the standard weight of a 12mm TMT bar in a 12-metre length?

A standard 12mm TMT bar has a nominal unit weight of 0.888 kg per metre. Since full-length construction rebars in India are manufactured to 12 metres (40 feet), one 12mm bar weighs 0.888 × 12 = 10.66 kg.

How many pieces of TMT bars are in one bundle?

Standard primary mill bundling per IS 1786: 8mm = 10 or 12 bars/bundle (~50 kg); 10mm = 7 or 8 bars/bundle (~52 kg); 12mm = 5 bars/bundle (~53 kg); 16mm = 3 bars/bundle (~57 kg); 20mm = 2 bars/bundle (~59 kg); 25mm = 1 bar/bundle (~46 kg); 32mm = 1 bar/bundle (~76 kg).

What is the permissible rolling tolerance under IS 1786:2008?

Bureau of Indian Standards specifies the following batch weight tolerances: Up to and including 10mm: ±7%; Over 10mm up to and including 16mm: ±5%; Over 16mm: ±3%. Sourced primary mills (JSW, SAIL, Jindal) strictly adhere to sectional tolerances.

Which grade of TMT bar is recommended for Punjab (Seismic Zone IV)?

Most of Punjab lies in Seismic Zone IV (moderate to high earthquake damage risk). Fe 500D and Fe 550D ("D" stands for High Ductility with minimum 16% elongation) are mandated by structural engineers for superior earthquake resistance compared to standard Fe 500.
