Understanding ISMC Channel Nomenclature & Weight Formula

ISMC stands for Indian Standard Medium Weight Channel. The number following ISMC denotes the total web depth D in millimetres. For example, ISMC 150 has a web depth of 150 mm and nominal unit weight of 16.80 kg/m.

Nominal Weight Formula: W ≈ [2 × B × tf + (D - 2 × tf) × tw] × 0.00785 kg/m, adjusted for standard root fillets (R1) per IS 808 geometry. Density of mild steel is 7.85 g/cm³.
